Fucked Up were once Toronto’s best kept secret and now with their signing to Jade Tree they have quickly become one of the most revered bands in the hardcore scene and seem to transcend into any sub-culture that is lucky enough to have been exposed to them. For years Fucked Up have been known as a fiercely traditional band, releasing mostly singles with one b-side on 7” vinyl with smaller hardcore labels (Deranged, Havoc, Slasher, Etc). Because of that, it seemed pretty unlikely that they would sign to a larger indie label. But it happened and they’ve finally released a record in the more contemporary form of a full length CD and LP. “Hidden World” is unlike any other hardcore or punk record around, infections and uncompromising, “Hidden World” averages about 5 minutes per song and 73 minutes total without a whiff of being long-winded. I don’t know how that’s possible, but apparently it is. Fucked Up had a vision and have executed it in what has to be considered the best record of the year, so far, hands down. Lyrically the band sounds like it wants to fight the world (Baiting the Public, wow) and Damian’s (aka Pink Eye) vocals bring the bands in your face style full circle. Further fueling the unexpected surprises on this record is an appearance by George Pettit of Alexisonfire, Ben Cook from No Warning/Surplus Sons and some well executed secondary instrumentals. Fucked Up had the balls to go with their vision and it’s paying off, I can’t say enough about how good “Hidden World” is. No bullshit, no drama, just a great record, start to finish.
