One of the best rock n’ roll bands around, Every Time I Die continue to outdo themselves on a regular basis. With the release of “Gutter Phenomenon”, Every Time I Die exceeded expectations and shed any possible predictability. They’ve truly paved their own way, mixing balls out rock n’ roll with hardcore and metal, Every Time I Die are one of the most entertaining bands around. I’ve been waiting for this DVD to drop for awhile, wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but based on what other underground(ish) bands have done with DVDs, I wasn’t expecting a lot.
The Movie Clocking in at about 2 Hours, the main feature of “Shit Happens” contains mostly behind the scenes video with a few live mixed in. What impresses me the most about the behind the scenes coverage is how many aspects of their lives they cover. Everything from relationships to life on the warped tour to their home life, pets and whatever else they could think of. Basically everything you ever wanted or didn’t want to know about Every Time I Die’s daily life is here. If you’ve seen Every Time I Die live, or even their music videos, you know they’re an incredible entertaining band and that carries over ten fold to the behind the scenes footage. I’m sure a lot of footage was left on the cutting room floor (or a hard drive), but these guys are definitely funny, gross and all around fun to watch. The live footage within the main feature is well cut, set to album versions of the music and doesn’t take away from any of the entertainment of the main documentary.
Live Footage Also included on the DVD is a set of live videos, they’re pretty well cut, the audio is isn’t all that great, but that’s a live show for you. Every Time I Die are if nothing else, a great live band, so the raw live footage is a big plus I think.
Music Videos All of the Every Time I Die videos are included on the dvd including “The New Black” and “Kill The Music”, both incredible videos off of Gutter Phenomenon. Videos for “I Been Gone A Long Time”, “Ebolerama” and “Logic of Crocodiles” round out the package.
Hidden Gems There’s a few hidden videos on the DVD, I was able to find two of them, although there may be more. The first was a video of Keith doing standup, it was surprisingly funny, in an unfunny way. Dry and awkward, but made me laugh. There’s also a mini-skit of ETID relocating to Pennsylvania which is hosted by Andy Williams, probably the funniest guy of the bunch.
Bottom Line Good quality, good directing and authoring by High Roller Studios. I found the DVD really entertaining, and is well worth the CAD$14 I got it for. Non-ETID fans probably aren’t going to appreciate it very much, although there are a lot of funny moments regardless. Pretty much a no-brainer, if you like ETID, get it.
